When South Tyneside Council was looking to upgrade the popular North Marine Park in the coastal town of South Shields, Proludic was successful in their bid to create a new play and fitness space using its themed play equipment to honour the Roman history of the area for the whole community and tourists to enjoy. Proludic’s design for the play area focused on this rich history dating back to Roman times when the port and fort acted as a supply base for garrisons on Hadrian’s Wall and beyond.

This connection to the local maritime history allowed Proludic to put forward a colourful inspirational design. These include the use of themed product ranges and their Grafic Games technique. Grafic Games brings a theme to life by printing designed illustrations onto the panels of the play equipment. Proludic were also pleased to include bespoke elements such as the Roman shipwrecked galley multi-play unit as the centrepiece. The Arbeia hilltop fort and local ancient landmarks such as The Bridge of Hadrian were also replicated along the way down the winding Tyne River in the wet pour surfacing.

Proludic utilised both themed and standard exciting and dynamic products to create a high capacity, high play value, holistic play area with a diverse range of activities to suit all abilities.

The holistic approach to the area extends with a new fitness trim trail consisting of 11 pieces of equipment installed on the green adjacent to the play facilities. The selected outdoor fitness equipment provides multiple exercise opportunities for varying physical abilities as part of a dedicated workout or incorporated into a run. The Proludic Sport app allows users to plan and track a personalised workout tailored to their fitness goals with tips and support from video demonstrations.

The transformation from an unused grassed area to the finished result speaks for itself. In the few months, the park has been opened, it has been inundated with families and those seeking exercise from the local community and tourists alike!

I loved that our design focused on the identity of the surrounding area and incorporated the rich history of the area. I am so pleased with the final result, particularly the bespoke elements, and the fact that the park is always busy speaks volumes.
