Abbey Park in West Bridgford shows that outdoor fitness is about more than equipment; it is about confidence, friendship and community.
Following Rushcliffe Borough Council’s investment in a new outdoor gym, resident Ruth Kerry wanted to make use of the facility but did not feel comfortable exercising alone. She posted in a local Facebook group inviting other women to join her for free workouts, and “Ladies that Lunge” was created.
The group now meets every Tuesday and Saturday morning. Members combine Proludic’s outdoor fitness equipment with their own kit to create adaptable circuits supporting strength, conditioning, balance, core stability and grip. Sessions are friendly, sociable and encouraging, with a little light-hearted competition. Most importantly, the group has helped members overcome the anxiety of using the gym alone.
The facility provides 10 activities across five pieces of equipment, combining cardio, bodyweight training, functional movement, callisthenics and climbing. The ACTI’Fun app also offers guidance on safe technique and exercise ideas.
Abbey Park’s outdoor gym is already improving wellbeing, confidence and social connection, while helping residents enjoy exercise in the fresh air. Ladies that Lunge continues to welcome new members, proving that shared activity can create lasting friendships and a stronger community.
