A new £190,000 Roman-themed play area has opened at Kinneil Estate in Bo’ness, transforming the existing site into a new inclusive destination inspired by the nearby Antonine Wall.

Falkirk Council invited four companies to submit proposals for the regeneration of the play area, located near Duchess Anne Cottages. The brief called for a high-quality and accessible space that would reflect the area’s heritage while providing exciting play opportunities for toddlers, juniors and teenagers.
The play area’s centrepiece is a bespoke wooden Roman Fort tower (J49201), standing over six metres high. It offers 19 play activities, including climbing, sliding, sensory play and role play, and accommodates up to 36 children.
Other themed features include a Roman Outpost (J49174), Chariot springer, battering ram rope swing (J499) and Centurion head-hole panel. The vintage rocking horse was also restored and retained.
Inclusive equipment includes an accessible roundabout, trampoline and varied swing seats, enabling children of different ages and abilities to play together. The site can accommodate up to 110 users. Despite prolonged heavy rain and difficult ground conditions, the play area opened in June 2026, creating a distinctive attraction celebrating Bo’ness’s connection to the Antonine Wall.
