Located opposite Jephson Gardens across the River Leam, Mill Gardens is a much-loved green space in Royal Leamington Spa. The space is known for its lawns, botanical planting, boating lake and play area. Its heritage is linked to Samuel Lockhart’s performing elephants, Wilhelmina, Trilby and Haddie, who once walked through the town and bathed in the river.
When the existing play area reached the end of its usable life, Warwick District Council appointed Proludic to create a high-quality, visually striking replacement. Our design also aimed to celebrate the park’s setting and local identity to bring something truly special to the community.
Proludic transformed the elephant theme into a bespoke design. At its heart stands a four-metre-high Robinia elephant, providing a sculptural landmark and opportunities for imaginative and physical play. An elephant springer and bespoke elephant slide reinforce the story throughout the space.
Inclusivity was central to the scheme. Developed with input from Evergreen School, the play area includes Warwickshire’s first inclusive seesaw, a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, twin trampolines and a range of tactile and sensory features. Swan-themed and botanical details reflect the nearby river and gardens.
The design combined natural Robinia timber with durable materials, allowing it to remain a community space for generations to come. The revitalised play area has been warmly welcomed by children, residents and stakeholders, creating a distinctive, accessible and locally meaningful destination for families.
