Proludic was delighted to design and deliver an imaginative themed playground for Barrow upon Soar Parish Council, inspired by the nearby River Soar.
Site: Mill Lane, Barrow upon Soar,
Leicestershire, LE12 8PY
Client: Barrow upon Soar Parish
Council
Budget: £90,000
Mill Lane playground was due for refurbishment, and the council wanted to create something distinct from the other nearby playgrounds. The aim was to transform the tired site into an engaging playground for children aged up to 12. The new design also represents the strong local identity and incorporates natural elements throughout.
Therefore, Proludic’s designers drew inspiration from the river, surrounding wildlife and local history. Thermographic and wetpour surfacing features lily pads, aquatic creatures and a winding river that flows through the length of the play area.
The centrepiece is a large boat-themed multiplay unit, with colours adapted to reflect the traditional canal boats seen nearby. The community also personalised the unit with a plaque naming it ‘The Barrow Kipper’. This references the remains of a plesiosaur fossil discovered in Barrow upon Soar in 1851, which became locally known as the Barrow Kipper.
Ultimately, these features create a memorable, imaginative themed playground that celebrates the area’s natural environment, heritage and unique character.
