In 2021, Theale Parish Council began an ambitious project to transform its recreation ground with improved facilities for children, teenagers and adults. The council appointed Proludic to design the site and lead community consultation. Our online survey identified local people’s preferences and priorities, ultimately receiving over 200 respondents. The survey showed a clear preference for a clear preference for a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and outdoor callisthenics equipment.

Site: Englefield Road, Theale,
RG7 5AS

Budget: £140,000

Age Range: Toddler, Junior, Teens, Adults

Date Opened: July 2022

Ranges: Diabolo, Kanope, ACTI’Fun

Two new accessible entrances and a path linking the churchyard to the recreation ground improved access, particularly for people with mobility needs. A natural colour palette was chosen for the wetpour surfacing and equipment to complement the setting of Holy Trinity Church.

The MUGA features sports markings, football goals and basketball hoops, with lower fencing on one side to bring spectators closer to the action. Alongside it, ACTI’Street and ACTI’Fit equipment provide opportunities for callisthenics, sociable exercise, fitness classes and boot camps.

The play area includes accessible swings, Kanopé and Diabolo multiplay units, trampolines, a rodeo board, an inclusive roundabout, toddler equipment, a cableway and monkey bars. Security lighting and CCTV help create a welcoming environment and discourage anti-social behaviour. The completed scheme was celebrated with a lively community opening event for residents of all ages.
