Rooted in Play: A Community-Built Playground in Chesham’s Lowndes Park

In the heart of Chesham’s Lowndes Park, a dynamic new playground has come to life through the passionate efforts of local organisations Love Lowndes, Chesham Town Council, and the Friends of Lowndes Park. This collaborative project aimed to transform a worn-out and unsafe playground into a vibrant, inclusive, and nature-inspired space for juniors and teens to play, explore, and grow.

Driven by community spirit, Love Lowndes led a four-year fundraising campaign, raising £220,000 through local events, sponsorships, and donations. Their dedication showcased Chesham’s commitment to enriching public spaces for young people and creating a place rooted in pride and inclusivity.

Proludic was selected after a competitive tender for their innovative approach, which embraced the park’s natural slope using their Origin’ wooden play range. The design includes multiple play zones—each offering a unique experience from adventurous climbing challenges to sensory and imaginative play - all integrated into the woodland setting.

At the heart of the space is a striking four-metre-high bespoke Robinia structure featuring slides, climbing elements, and lookout points, designed especially for older children. Accessibility was a key priority, with inclusive equipment such as an accessible roundabout, wheelchair seesaw, and inclusive swings. New paths, shaded seating, and picnic areas further enhance the site’s usability for families and carers.

The playground also reflects Chesham’s heritage, with river-inspired surfacing and educational signage sharing the town’s origins. Handmade features, like a bug hotel, bring community involvement full circle.

Delivered on time and within budget, the playground stands open and inviting - a lasting legacy of community, creativity, and connection.
