Abbey Park in West Bridgford is proving that outdoor fitness is about far more than equipment. It is about confidence, connection and community.

Embracing community fitness in the fresh air

After Rushcliffe Borough Council invested in a new outdoor gym, local resident Ruth Kerry was eager to try it out. While she loved the idea of working out in the fresh air, she did not feel comfortable exercising alone. So she did something simple that had a big impact: she put a call-out on Facebook in a local ladies’ group, inviting others to join her for free workouts in the park. The response was immediate, and “Ladies that Lunge” was born.

Adaptable workouts and comradery

Now, the group meets twice a week on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings. Founder member Catherine Bailey was part of the group that lobbied for the gym. She says sessions have become a weekly highlight for some members. Together they build a circuit using Proludic equipment and their own kit, creating a friendly, sociable workout that supports strength, conditioning, core stability and grip strength. There is a touch of light-hearted competitiveness, always in good spirits. Additionally, crucially, the group has helped members overcome the inhibition of coming to the gym alone.

Wellbeing, friendships and fun

The outdoor gym offers 10 exercise activities across five pieces of equipment, combining cardio and strength training. It includes a street workout combination for callisthenics-style progression (J52150), a functional movement ACTI’Fit station (J37222), a bodyweight street workout structure (J5219), and a cardio/conditioning ACTI’Fit unit for warm-ups and endurance (J37213). A complementary climbing-led feature (J2825) broadens the active offer for park users.

With the added support of the ACTI’Fun app, which guides users on safe technique and exercise ideas, Abbey Park’s new facility is already boosting wellbeing, friendships and fun and the Ladies that Lunge are always welcoming new members.
